Like other dogs, your Cavalier will love you more for feeding it your table scraps. Although it may not be good manners, doing so is not necessarily an unhealthy practice. Some fresh foods can be very healthy for your dog just as they can be for you. Keeping in mind their dietary requirements. Steamed rice, chicken (and other lean meats), yogurt, fresh vegetables can be quite nutritious. You should however also observe carefully whenever introducing new foods. Cavaliers are not known for being prone to food allergies and we have not ever had a Cavalier with a food allergy, however this is always possible in an individual dog.
There are a number of quality dog foods on the market. If you are unsure about a good choice of dog food you should consult with Veterinarian for a recommendation. Many human foods, and changing dog food brands, can cause digestion problems particularly with puppies. For dry regular food, we feed the highly rated Kirkland brand available at Costco. There are however other great choices.
Your puppy will have been eating dry dog food exclusively for at least two weeks before going home with you. We start each new owner out with a healthy sample of this same food to mix evenly with your brand for a good start. Usually you will want to wait at least a few days to allow the puppy to acclimate to your home before changing their food on them. As they grow , you may also wish to share some fresh foods as well- just use good sense.
